Hi there Andy , Ok the most common issue we see regarding the POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION message after start up is a software issue within the electronic hydraulic power steering pump /module
this can sometimes pull a fault code up eg,, u0162000 or sometimes no fault codes are present,
this fault is caused by a low voltage in the power steering pump/module during cranking
basically the module does not wake up properly ,
The fix for this is to have the Power steering pump/module updated to the latest level software through Fords IDS laptop ( this can ONLY be done through IDS )
There was an updated software level installed in production since 26/03/2008
ford released a TSB ( SERVICE BULLETIN) 22/2008
So it may be worth just phoning and asking how much they will charge to update the software and refrence this TSB
my dealership would charge an hours labour (max ) to carry out this update as this is the minimum charge when IDS is needed
The only other issues we have seen is water ingress into the power steering pump main connector but this was back on the early c-max/focus and i have never came across this issue on s-max/galaxy as the pump is a slighty differnet design
